Yes. The DVSA offers extra time, an English or Welsh audio version through headphones, a reader, British Sign Language and other support for a UK theory test. You ask when you book and send evidence of your condition, and there is no extra charge for it.
Ask when you book, not on the day
Support has to be arranged in advance. It is not something that can be added when you arrive, so it is worth sorting at the point of booking even if you are unsure whether you will need it.
If you have a reading difficulty
Available support includes:
- Extra time on the multiple-choice questions.
- Audio through headphones, in English or Welsh.
- A reader, who reads out the instructions and questions on screen and can record your answers.
- Rewording, where staff change sentence order and non-technical wording to make a question clearer — without changing what it is asking.
You will be asked for evidence. That can be an email, letter or report from a teacher or other educational professional, a doctor or medical professional, an occupational therapist, or an online dyslexia screening product.
If you are deaf or hard of hearing
- British Sign Language on screen, shown next to the questions and answers.
- A BSL interpreter, at no extra charge.
- Lip speakers and hearing loops.
Anything else
For a condition not covered above, contact the DVSA to discuss it before you book. That order matters — arranging support around an existing booking is harder than booking around the support you need.
It does not cost more
None of this carries an extra fee, and asking for it does not change the standard you are held to. It changes how the test is delivered, not what you have to know.
