How to choose the right driving test centre?
There is no shortcut here. Like anywhere else, Hertfordshire practical test centres are strategically located to test your driving skills in different scenarios.
This means you’ll face a mixed bag of road types and traffic conditions, including narrow streets, residential areas, stop-and-go situations, and more.
Check our detailed guides for each centre to decide which one suits you best. Practice with your local instructor to handle any tricky areas that make you nervous.
Pass rates for Hertfordshire practical test centres
Not surprisingly, almost all learner drivers obsess over driving test pass rates. Because of this, we make sure to elaborate on them in all of our test centre guides.
When we look at the national average in the UK, the pass rate stands at 48%. On the other hand, this rate naturally varies quite a bit across different areas in Hertfordshire.
The practical test centres in Hertfordshire with the highest test pass rates are:
- Letchworth - 55.7%
- Borehamwood - 51.5%
- Bishop’s Stortford - 50.5%
- Watford - 48.8%
- Stevenage - 47.4%
- St Albans - 43.6%
We can confidently say that the pass rates generally look pretty good in Hertfordshire. Of course, they don't tell the whole story.
Whilst it’s interesting to discuss statistics, test success ultimately comes down to your effort and practice, not just pass rates. If you’re well-prepared, you have every chance in the world of getting your licence.

What to expect for your practical driving test?
After a long haul, you are finally ready to take your test. Before heading out to the centre on the big day, make sure you get there at least 10 minutes before, with your provisional.
Your test will follow this basic format:
- An eyesight test to check your ability to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
- Two “show me, tell me” questions on vehicle safety and maintenance
- A 20-minute general driving under the guidance of your examiner. Plus, you'll need to perform one of the manoeuvres like parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right.
- A 20-minute independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a clear destination.
Once you park at the centre, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Your results will be shown in only a few minutes.
Your examiner will give you a feedback sheet that contains details of driving test faults you may have accumulated. If you succeed, you’ll earn a test pass certificate and chance to send off for your new licence.
