Free Michigan (MI) SOS Practice Tests 2026

Michigan licenses drivers through the Secretary of State, not a DMV. The written knowledge test includes a road-sign test, and you must pass both before a Temporary Instruction Permit. These 339 practice questions are written against What Every Driver Must Know. Start any topic with no account.

The official Michigan written test

Michigan Secretary of State sets the live exam. Every number below is cited. Practice-bank size on this page (339 questions across 14 tests) is counted from the live Michigan lessons, not from the official paper.

What the test doesThe sourced figureSource
Official question count and pass markCurrent SOS pages describe a multiple-choice knowledge test that includes a road-sign test. They do not publish a Class O question count or passing score. Circulating blog numbers are not repeated here.Michigan SOS — New drivers (18 and older)
Teen vs adult pathUnder 18: the knowledge test is taken in Segment 1 of Graduated Driver Licensing, not as a walk-in SOS exam. Age 18 and older: take it at a Secretary of State office (no fee) or online ($6.50). The online paper is the same test; you must pass an Operator section (about 45 minutes) and a Signs segment (about 15 minutes).Michigan SOS — New drivers (18 and older)
Attempts and retestFailing to get a passing score ends the sitting. You must reschedule for a different day. SOS does not publish an attempt cap. A passed result is valid for one year; a new TIP after expiry means taking the knowledge test again.Michigan SOS — New drivers (18 and older)
Official free sampleSOS publishes a 10-question “Test Your Safe Driving Knowledge” PDF drawn from What Every Driver Must Know. It is a study sheet, not a scored official exam.Michigan SOS — Test Your Safe Driving Knowledge
Historical profile (not current rules)NHTSA’s 2007–08 profile listed Michigan at 80 questions and 70%, a 75-minute test and a 1-day retest wait. The compiled table has no official Michigan pass-rate figure. Those numbers are historical evidence, not a figure SOS publishes today.Historical — not a current agency rule.Drivings permit-test pass rates by state

Official handbook and sample test

Use the agency’s own materials first. These practice tests sit beside them, they do not replace them.

Practice by topic

Each topic is a separate free test. The blurbs name Michigan rules, not a generic US paper.

MI Road Signs Test

Michigan’s knowledge test includes a dedicated Signs segment (about 15 minutes online). Drill STOP, YIELD, work-zone orange, and the “Where Workers Present 45” sign.

MI Traffic Signals Test

A flashing red is a stop. A flashing yellow means proceed with caution — the pair the official Michigan sample tests.

MI Right-of-Way Test

Who yields at a Michigan intersection, and the duty to pedestrians at the marked crosswalk limit line.

MI Speed Limits Test

Drive a safe speed for conditions, up to the posted limit. Where workers are present, slow to 45 mph or lower. Keep a 3-to-4-second gap (6+ when conditions are poor).

MI Lane Use Test

Keep right, pass left. Bicycle lanes are never for parking or pulling over.

MI Turns Test

Pick the lane, signal, keep the wheels straight until you turn, and yield. Open the door with your right hand so you look over the left shoulder for bikes.

MI Parking Test

Park parallel and as close as possible to the right curb. Michigan’s handbook covers hill parking, disability spaces, and the yellow free-parking sticker — not a generic curb-color chart.

MI Freeway Test

Enter, merge, and pick a lane on a Michigan freeway. The official sample asks when to move left from the right lane.

MI Sharing the Road Test

Slow at least 10 mph below the posted limit and move over for a stopped emergency vehicle. Three-to-four seconds behind a bike on a two-lane road without a bike lane.

MI Road Conditions Test

Michigan ice and snow: look to the right edge of the road to cut headlight glare, and stretch the following gap to 6 seconds or more.

MI Alcohol and Drugs Test

Michigan’s handbook: even one drink can impair driving, and only time sobers you up. A drug conviction suspends the license even if you were not driving.

MI Emergencies Test

Tire blowouts, brake failure, stalls on tracks, and Michigan Move Over.

MI Vehicle Controls Test

Seat, mirrors, restraints, and the pre-drive setup a Michigan skills examiner expects. Driver-activated parking-assist and self-steering must stay off.

MI Practice Permit Test

A mixed paper from every Michigan topic. SOS does not publish a current question count; the official test includes a separate road-sign section.

Questions about these tests

Are these Michigan practice tests really free?
Yes. Every question, every answer and every explanation is free, with no account and no email. The Secretary of State also publishes a 10-question study PDF from What Every Driver Must Know — use that too. Pro adds the exam simulator, the mistake bank and the study assistant, but never the questions themselves.
How many questions are on the real Michigan knowledge test?
SOS currently publishes the format (multiple choice, including a road-sign test) and the adult online timing (about 45 minutes for Operator, about 15 minutes for Signs). It does not publish a Class O question count or passing score on the pages cited here. A federal historical profile listed 80 questions at 70% in 2007–08. That is not a current SOS figure.
Do Michigan teens and adults take the same knowledge test?
Adults 18 and older sit the SOS knowledge test at an office or online. Under 18, the knowledge test is part of Segment 1 driver education; you then apply for the Level 1 learner license at an office. Fail an adult sitting and you come back on a different day. A pass is good for one year.
Where do the Michigan questions come from?
They are written against What Every Driver Must Know. Every question cites the handbook section it came from. An Ohio paper will not teach you Michigan’s 45 mph worker-present work-zone limit or the Dutch-reach door rule.

What Pro adds

The Michigan practice tests stay free. Pro is the study plan around them: a timed exam simulator, a mistake bank that re-serves every question you got wrong, and a study assistant. It does not unlock the questions — those are already on this page.
