The official California written test

California Department of Motor Vehicles sets the live exam. Every number below is cited. Practice-bank size on this page (297 questions across 14 tests) is counted from the live California lessons, not from the official paper.

What the test doesThe sourced figureSource
Official pass mark80% for an original Class C knowledge test, teens and adultsCalifornia DMV — Learner’s Permits
Official question countCalifornia DMV does not currently publish a question count on its learner-permit or testing-process pages. Circulating teen-versus-adult splits from unofficial sites are not repeated here.California DMV — Learner’s Permits
Teen vs adult pathSame published 80% score. Under 18: 15½ or older, driver education, and a parent or guardian signature. 18 and over: no driver-education certificate is required to sit the knowledge test.California DMV — Learner’s Permits
Attempts and retestThree attempts on one application, then you must reapply. Minors wait seven days to retake a failed knowledge test, not including the day of the failure. The handbook does not publish a wait for adults.California Driver’s Handbook, Section 3: The Testing Process
Historical profile (not current rules)NHTSA’s 2007–08 profile listed California at 46 questions, 85%, a 30-minute test and a 7-day retest wait, with a 57.3% pass rate in a 2005 one-day under-18 query. Each topic is a separate free test. The blurbs name California rules, not a generic US paper.

Questions about these tests

Are these California practice tests really free?
Yes. Every question, every answer and every explanation is free, with no account and no email. California DMV also publishes its own sample Class C tests; use both. Pro adds the exam simulator, the mistake bank and the study assistant, but never the questions themselves.
How many questions are on the real California DMV test?
California DMV currently publishes the pass mark (80%) and the attempt rules, not a question count, on its learner-permit and handbook testing-process pages. A federal historical profile compiled on our pass-rate page listed 46 questions at 85% in 2007–08. That is not a current DMV figure, so we do not treat it as one.
Is the test different for teens and adults?
The published score is the same 80%. The path is not: applicants under 18 must be at least 15½, complete driver education, and have a parent or guardian sign. Adults 18 and over skip the driver-education certificate for the knowledge test. Minors wait seven days to retake a failed knowledge test.
Where do the California questions come from?
They are written against the California Driver’s Handbook. Every question cites the handbook section it came from. A Texas or New York paper will teach you the wrong defaults — California’s residential limit is 25 mph, not Texas’s 30.

What Pro adds

The California practice tests stay free. Pro is the study plan around them: a timed exam simulator, a mistake bank that re-serves every question you got wrong, and a study assistant. It does not unlock the questions — those are already on this page.
