Your pass certificate lasts for 2 years, and you must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you'll have to take the theory test again. There is no extension and no appeal.
How long does a theory test certificate last?
The certificate lasts for 2 years from the day you pass the theory test, and the deadline applies to the practical test itself rather than the date you book it. GOV.UK states that your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years and that you must pass your driving test in that time.
You must have a provisional driving licence to book your theory test. There are 2 parts to the test: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception, a video test about spotting hazards on the road. You book and take them as a single test, and you must pass both parts to pass. You need 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice part and 44 out of 75 on the hazard perception part. If your certificate expires, you must book and take the full test again, and nothing carries over from an expired certificate.
You have to wait at least 3 working days before taking the theory test again.
How much of the 2 years does the waiting time use?
DVSA measures the median waiting time as the number of weeks between booking a car test and taking it. In July 2026 the middle centre of the 314 had a median waiting time of 11.9 weeks.
| Centres ranked by median wait, July 2026 | One attempt costs | Share of a 2-year certificate |
| Shortest centre, Carlisle LGV (Cars) | 0.3 weeks | 0.3% |
| Lower quartile | 8.3 weeks | 8% |
| Middle centre of 314 | 11.9 weeks | 11% |
| Great Britain, median test taken | 11.14 weeks | 11% |
| Upper quartile | 17.0 weeks | 16% |
| 90th percentile | 21.0 weeks | 20% |
| Longest centre, Crieff | 31.4 weeks | 30% |
A quarter of centres had a median wait of 8.3 weeks or less, and a further quarter had one above 17 weeks. Taking the middle centre in each area, Wales had a median of 8.9 weeks, London 12.3 weeks and Scotland 17.4 weeks.
What is the latest date for booking the practical test?
You can book a test up to 24 weeks in the future, and there is no waiting list or cancellation list. If you passed the theory test on 20 August 2026, the certificate expires in August 2028. The table below counts back one median queue for a single attempt, then two queues to allow for a retake.
| Test centre | Median wait | Book by, for one attempt | Book by, to leave room for two |
| Crieff | 31.4 weeks | 13 January 2028 | 7 June 2027 |
| Bedford | 27.1 weeks | 12 February 2028 | 7 August 2027 |
| Edinburgh (Currie) | 23.0 weeks | 12 March 2028 | 3 October 2027 |
| Glasgow (Shieldhall) | 16.3 weeks | 28 April 2028 | 5 January 2028 |
| Taunton | 11.9 weeks | 29 May 2028 | 6 March 2028 |
| Birmingham (Kings Heath) | 11.7 weeks | 30 May 2028 | 9 March 2028 |
| Leeds (Colton Mill) | 8.4 weeks | 22 June 2028 | 24 April 2028 |
| Bristol (Kingswood) | 5.3 weeks | 14 July 2028 | 7 June 2028 |
What does a failed practical test mean for the deadline?
Rebook your driving test if you failed your test and want to resit it, and you have to choose a date at least 10 working days away. Great Britain's car pass rate in July 2026 was 52.14%. Two attempts at the middle centre use 23.8 weeks of the certificate, and two attempts at Crieff use 62.8 weeks.
| Your centre's median wait | Attempts that fit in 2 years | Number of centres |
| Over 26.1 weeks | 3 | 4 |
| 20.9 to 26.1 weeks | 4 | 30 |
| 17.4 to 20.9 weeks | 5 | 37 |
| 14.9 to 17.4 weeks | 6 | 40 |
| 11.6 to 14.9 weeks | 7 or 8 | 49 |
| 11.6 weeks or less | 9 or more | 154 |
Why do eight centres show a waiting time longer than the booking window?
A car test can only be booked 24 weeks in advance. GOV.UK confirms that you can book a test up to 24 weeks in the future and that there is no waiting list or cancellation list. A centre can still show a median above 24 weeks because DVSA bases the measure on the date the test was eventually taken, including learners who moved their test after booking.
| Centre | Median wait, July 2026 | Booking window still free |
| Crieff | 31.4 weeks | 0% |
| Bedford | 27.1 weeks | 0.4% |
| Callander | 26.9 weeks | 3.7% |
| Campbeltown | 26.9 weeks | 0% |
| Arbroath | 25.9 weeks | 0% |
| Letchworth | 25.0 weeks | 2.3% |
| Hawick | 24.9 weeks | 24.5% |
| Forfar | 24.1 weeks | 3.7% |
How do you change or cancel a driving test booking?
You can change your driving test appointment up to 2 times for a car test. When you change it, you can find an earlier driving test, sometimes called a cancellation appointment, move your test to a later date, or change which test centre you take your test at. You can change more than one thing at the same time, and you can change your test up to the time it starts.
You must give notice to change or cancel a test, or you'll have to pay again. You'll have to pay again if you give less than 10 full working days' notice for a car driving test, and you'll get a full refund if you give at least 10 full working days' notice. If you need to make more changes after the 2 allowed, you have to cancel your test and rebook it, and you'll have to pay for the new test when you book.
What do you need to book a driving test?
You must book your driving test yourself. Your driving instructor is not allowed to do this for you, and it is against the law to book a car driving test for someone else. To book, you need your UK driving licence number and a credit or debit card, and your driving instructor's personal reference number if you want to check they are available.
You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your test. The booking service is available from 6am to 11:40pm, and you can check the cost of your driving test before you start.
Should you pass the theory test before starting driving lessons?
You can take the theory test from your 17th birthday onwards, and you usually need to pass it before you can get your full car driving licence. The theory pass rates by age for 2025/26 are below.
| Theory test pass rates, 2025/26 | Pass rate |
| All candidates | 44.8% |
| Candidates aged 17 | 51.1% |
| Candidates aged 45 to 59 | 37.1% |
