A cyclist ahead is something to watch; the scoring window starts when the cyclist changes position or the road narrows so that you need to adapt.

Look well ahead, scan the pavement and side roads, and use the whole scene rather than staring at one object. Changes in speed or direction are important clues. The best moment to respond is as soon as the hazard begins to require action—not after you would already need to brake sharply or swerve.

## How the scoring system works

Earlier correct clicks inside the scoring window earn more points, from five down to one. Clicking too soon, before the hazard develops, does not score that hazard; clicking after the window also earns zero. Each clip plays once in the real test.

Do not try to create a rhythmic clicking pattern. The scoring system can detect repeated or excessive clicking and award zero for that clip. One well-timed click is the aim. A second click can be sensible if the situation changes further, but many automatic clicks are not a substitute for observation.

## How to practise hazard perception

Use practice clips filmed from a driver's perspective and review the scoring window after each attempt. Ask what changed in the scene, when you first noticed it and when a safe driver would begin to respond. This feedback trains anticipation instead of guesswork.

Practise with different road users and environments: children near schools, pedestrians at crossings, parked vehicles, cyclists, large vehicles, junctions, roundabouts, rural roads, animals and night driving. Keep your eyes moving, check mirrors in the imagined sequence and leave space around anything that could develop into danger.

The hazard perception section is the second part of the theory test, after the multiple-choice questions. You must pass both parts in the same appointment. Familiarise yourself with the instructions and use a mouse comfortably before test day, but focus most of your training on recognising risk early.
