Good theory-test preparation is less about memorising answer patterns and more about learning the rule, practising it in context and reviewing why an answer was wrong.

## Know the current car theory-test format

The multiple-choice part has 50 questions and lasts 57 minutes. You need at least 43 correct answers. After a break of up to three minutes, the hazard-perception part shows 14 clips. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard and one clip contains two. You need at least 44 points out of 75.

You must pass both parts in the same sitting. If you pass, the certificate number normally lasts for two years. These figures come from the current GOV.UK pages for [multiple-choice questions](https://www.gov.uk/theory-test/multiple-choice-questions), [hazard perception](https://www.gov.uk/theory-test/hazard-perception-test) and the [pass mark](https://www.gov.uk/theory-test/pass-mark-and-result).

## Use a repeatable revision loop

1. **Learn one topic:** read the relevant Highway Code or official study section before answering questions.
2. **Practise without rushing:** explain to yourself why the correct answer is safe and why the alternatives are not.
3. **Record mistakes:** group errors by topic, such as signs, stopping distances or vulnerable road users.
4. **Revisit weak topics:** repeat them after a gap rather than immediately memorising the same answer order.
5. **Finish with timed mocks:** use full-length practice only after your topic scores are consistent.

## Practise hazard perception as observation, not clicking

A developing hazard is something that is beginning to require a change of speed or direction. Score is awarded for spotting that development early. Clicking continuously or in a pattern can result in no score for a clip, so practise identifying the moment a possible hazard starts to affect your driving.

## Use current, traceable material

Make the [Highway Code](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code) your reference point and check the official [revision and practice guidance](https://www.gov.uk/theory-test/revision-and-practice). Practice providers can help you structure revision, but their questions should teach the syllabus rather than claim to reproduce the live test bank.

## Prepare for the test conditions

- Do at least one timed mock without notes or interruptions.
- Practise flagging a difficult multiple-choice question and returning to it.
- Check the official booking details, identity requirements and available accessibility support before test day.
- Do not book based on one good mock score; look for consistent results across several topics and tests.
